Leadership isn’t about power—it’s about people
Dr. Debbie Chatman Bryant, RN, grew up in Moncks Corner, SC, where her parents instilled the values of a resilient character, academic success, and community service. Debbie pursued her passion for community service by working professionally as a community and population health nurse. She rose to become an Associate Professor and Associate Dean, College of Nursing, MUSC, before retiring in 2021. Upon retirement, Dr. Bryant was awarded the esteemed title of Associate Professor Emerita in the Department of Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her journey has spanned decades of dedicated service, extending beyond South Carolina in the fields of healthcare, education, and community outreach. Notably, she served as the Executive Director for Operations, Community Outreach, and Engagement on the leadership team at Virginia Commonwealth University's Massey Cancer Center.
Debbie's work has touched lives across South Carolina, from expanding breast cancer screening access in rural and underserved counties to mentoring the next generations of healthcare professionals, including nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, as well as community leaders. Throughout it all, her heart always remains close to home—grounded in family, community, and the belief that real change starts with listening and leading together.

Transparent Approach to Our Energy
Debbie believes listening is the first step in leading. Creating a space for everyone to bring their lived experiences fosters a welcoming environment where ideas flourish. Her transparent approach will include sharing information about energy sources, production methods, affordability, and environmental impacts. By prioritizing open communication and engaging closely with stakeholders, she aims to empower communities to make informed decisions about energy use. She knows the difference between managing and leading—and she chooses to lead with empathy, courage, and vision.
Anchored in Community
Debbie has deep roots in the community. She and her husband grew up in Moncks Corner, in the Whitlesville and Kitfield neighborhoods, respectively. Her career as a community health nurse, community health organizer, preventive health advocate, and educator has ensured that people feel seen, heard, and valued—whether in a hospital waiting room, a classroom, or a town hall.
She believes that individuals and communities thrive when they are invested, engaged, and trust their elected leaders to invite them into conversations. That’s why she’s committed to building a cooperative culture rooted in transparency, trust, and shared decision-making. Debbie understands that every member of the co-op has a story, and those stories deserve to shape the future of our energy system. From expanding access to clean power to ensuring fair representation, she’s ready to lead with the community.
Affordable access to Energy for all
Dr. Debbie Chatman Bryant, RN, is dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of income or background, has access to essential services. Her mission has gone beyond buzzwords—she actively engages in community discussions about healthcare and mentors future healthcare professionals.
In rural electric cooperative governance, Debbie will advocate for equal representation and transparency, believing that every member should have a voice in decisions affecting their energy costs. She is committed to fair policies that support those in remote areas or financial hardship. Debbie will promote energy efficiency, clean energy options, and affordable access for low-income households, renters, and seniors. Her focus is on reducing energy costs and investing in sustainable infrastructure. For Debbie, equal opportunity is a promise, not just a policy.
